Pastor Steve Munsey has dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel of Christ and the lessons contained therein. In addition to being an author and playwright of extremely popular re-tellings of the Bible such as Jesus of Nazareth, he has been the senior pastor at the Family Christian Center church in Munster, Indiana since 1984.
Operation Care was birthed from the command of Jesus to love others. Steve’s heart was full of vision by reading the words of Jesus in Matthew,
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matthew 25:365
If there’s one thing that Steve has learned from the Bible, it is that you must love Jesus with all your heart and also love people with God’s love. It’s for this reason that he has always striven to go into his very own community with the people of Family Christian Center and show the tangible love of Jesus Christ in a practical way. He does this with the goal of helping those who are in going through difficult times by providing food, clothing and toiletries through Operation Care.
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” Peter 4:10
Though Steve has received worldwide recognition for his unique style and ability to reach audiences across all generations, he grew up in a blue collar family and has never been averse to rolling up his sleeves to do whatever it takes to get a job done. In the ’80s and early ’90s, Steve was one of the most outspoken members of the community against the evils perpetuating the drug epidemic in the Midwest.
He has visited families in their times of need and has rushed to the aid of his community during crises like natural disasters such as the flood that impacted Munster, Indiana a few years back. He and several hundred members of his congregation took tools and cleaning supplies and went into flooded neighborhoods to help those whose homes were ruined by the muddied waters. People were overwhelmed by the love and generosity and were able to see the tangible love of Jesus Christ. Steve also rallied other church leaders and had a night of hope where money was raised and given to the town of Munster to help with the devastation.
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10
One organization that Steve has worked with to better the local and global communities is Operation Care International. The reach of this organization’s ministry is special. It has delivered millions of tons of food to local families in need, sent ministers to five area prisons to teach and inspire inmates, and sent chaplains to twenty-three local hospitals.
